My doggie

I am thankful for my doggie, and thought I would post this morning's photo of her here. Even though she can be quite mischevious, I think she is very cute.

She was adopted from the Human Society. She is a purebred dog, and many people seem surprised to know that shelters receive many purebred, in addition to mixed breed, animals.

I thought this was a very bizzare, but interesting, grouping in my neighbor's yard.

Anyway, I had an opportunity to connect with David Pohl recently, who is a wonderfully talented artist.

David also knew and worked with my friend Scott Fertig, and I'm still working on efforts to preserve Scott's Chevy Mural. More updates on that later.

A piece of work by Scott Alan Fertig, photographed by me. I keep hearing words like "brave" and "crazy" circulating when talking about others who make dramatic changes. The jury appears to be out on me. I think I'm too busy to know if I care! I met Lynne Conner, PhD, recently, and told her why I wanted to get a PhD, and before she left Pittsburgh for Colby, she told me to go for it. It's good to hear from a few people that you are doing the right thing, even if the majority of people think you are crazy. This is my dog doing what I need to be doing, resting. Instead, I'm up at 4am cleaning my house. Thats ok...it needs to be cleaned and prepared for sale.

Trying to get many things done before my b-day (and retirement!) celebration on August 15. I hope to raise a lot of money for Dana Dolney, who I still need to connect with, and for a fund to preserve the Chevy Mural by Scott Alan Fertig. Some good folks at the Pittsburgh Foundation sent me some information that I think might make this possible.

I tried to stick it out last Sunday at Art What You Got...but almost had a lift-off with the tent. All good, though. Thank you, Polish Hill Civic Association! Also, thank you, Steve Earle for signing the brandy-new Telecaster I'm raffling off on August 15.

Well, keep arting people. And get some rest. This includes you, Susan Constanse! : ) Thanks for all the coordination on Sunday.

I'm sure Count Casimir would agree. I have a new Art Utility Vehicle, by the way. Only Susan Constanse has seen it so far. It's a stealth AUT, so I don't think it can be detected at low flying ranges. Or, low MPG. What can I say? It's got space. I take the bus.

This is my neighbor Sam. She's my neighbor's daughter, and she just graduated from high school. Congrats, Sam! She has wonderful parents, and I'm sure they'd provide for her if she had medical needs.

Still trying to help some people, and on my day off. Can't really tell ya why I have a day off, but I believe it's a good reason, and the right one. Here's a hint: sometimes people think they can take advantage of others, sometimes women, which essentially takes away the other's power. I don't let them get away with it; I'm sure Sam won't, and for now, I know Sam's hockey-playing Dad, Chuck, won't. He might even use a stick. Heh.

...believe it or not, I'm reading its live blog. If I didn't know me, I'd think I was 10 years younger.

The truth is, I don't really watch tv. Blogs are quieter, I guess. Unless you live in Crafton, near Pittsburgh, where people tend to scream over hockey games.

This picture is of Tom Sarver of the Tom Museum, holding a sign that Scott Fertig once said was beautiful.

Scott sadly passed away on May 2, and you can read about him and his work here.

I recall that Scott said he really liked the Clash, and he and I talked in the last year about the Joe Strummer documentary by Julien Temple.

By the time of his death, Joe Strummer seemed to be really happy and satisfied with his rich life of creating music for others. You should see the film if you get a chance.

Pheasants Deer Prosperity Hiatus Etc

I have some pheasants in my dining room. Here are two. One is wearing a lilac wig, just like Dana in the previous post. My friend Diane told me that pheasants are symbols of prosperity. We'll see about that. Still waiting for my own symbols of prosperity; and have some waiting on me. Some not so patiently.

Saw some folks and some deer in the park. No pheasants, though.

Taking a hiatus to make some jewelry over the next few days. I want to make a necklace for Yumi Kori. All should see her work at the Mattress Factory; it's fun...just hold on to the railings.

I think we should all do more yoga. My sister told me recently to "take a Tuesday night yoga class." The funny thing is, I already was taking one. She is too.

Everyone should take a yoga class; mine might be moving to Thursdays.

Oh, and I saw the Cupcake Man on the street downtown yesterday. I told him I recognized him only because I see his face everyday in my image folder.

The Amazing Dana Dolney

The universe and my friend Sean happened to bring me to an event at at a place called Remedy in Lawrenceville.

There was a fundraiser for a woman named Dana, pictured here. I bid on her photo of the horse, behind her. I think she takes amazing photos.

Dana's wig was an amazing silvery-lilac.

The day was so strange. I started a foundation today, at least as far as the gov't is concerned. Called "Artists for Hope Foundation." I did this before I met Dana. I can't take credit for the name. Well, the name of the foundation, nor can I take credit for the name Dana.

Artists for Hope is a name thought of by another powerfully beautiful artist: Christiane D. Leach.

Dana Dolney said she's gonna work something out with me to get me a print of that horsey for my own fundraiser, August 15 at Your Inner Vagabond. Thank you, Dana Dolney. Come to my b-day party, Dana Dolney, it's the same day.

I successfully converted my John Paul Jones sign to an Obama sign. Now, John Paul did not win the 27th District seat in PA, according to early, unofficial returns , but I think he'd be darn proud of my ecologically sound choice to re-use his sign. He just seems like that kinda guy.

Thanks, Mr. Jones. I think you have a good career ahead of you, no matter what today's (impressive, if you ask me) results. I'm sure you'll keep doing good for all no matter what you do!

I heard, and have no reason to doubt, that the Maxo Vanka murals were painted over in Millvale. Yes, you read that correctly. Right place, wrong time. I think there was a scorned woman in there somewhere, or love or sex gone wrong, too. A sordid tale of sex and real estate, and the loss of art.

Maybe another sordid tale will result in the revelation and restoration of the murals. Maybe.

Ok, so, Pittsburgh supposedly has an important connection to the Mayan Calendar. I'm not arguing anything these days. The building pictured in the article and in my photo here are both the Gulf Tower in Pittsburgh. Coincidently, I am leaving the desk and building that has this nice view, May 5. That would be, Cinco de Mayo, eh?

Anyway, there are lots of interesting things going on in Pittsburgh, terrestrially, or extra-so.

This installation is still at the Mattress Factory 'til May 11, complete with animated Alien and UFO.

And don't forget that right here in Pittsburgh is the Carnegie International 2008: Life on Mars. And the soundtrack?

I heard interesting things tonight about "the talk" about me. My friends spoke up for me in defense. That was cool. Personally, I think if there's any talk about me, I must be doing something really right.

They graciously hosted me so that there would be no drinking and driving. No one should drink and drive, really.

I didn't pay him for this, but Edward J. Delaney (or Ted, as I know him) graciously lent me a copy of his (first?) latest film, The Times Were Never So Bad: The Life of Andre Dubus. I'd like to see this film win all kinda awards and get on PBS, maybe via Independent Lens.

For now, I'm seeing what Pittsburgh Filmmakers might suggest to get it in front of a Pittsburgh audience.

All this put me in mind of one of my favorite Nick Cave songs, "Straight to You."

I visited the Polish Hill Civic Association today, and was quite impressed. They are having a call for artists. Sounds neat. I might make silly necklaces and sell 'em.

It's good to have an association like this, and good people willing to make good things happen for their communities. Good people who do this with a lot of time and effort, and with little financial reward.

Because it's not about the money. But money helps. That's why you should buy art from any artist who might be working a day job in an office for your neighborhood association. Because she's probably a good person. Maybe she's not a she, but today she was.

I'm planning a b-day party for my 40th. A benefit for artists, inspired by my friend Scott Fertig. If he donates a piece of art, he'll benefit too, for sure. And then his wife, my dearie dear friend Carolyn will benefit, too. But Scott suggests I look to the artists he knows and appreciates for help. So I will, when I have time. Unless they want to contact me directly.

I think I only want to have 10 pieces of work available for sale, then set up an account at my workplace for donations if people can't afford the art. Artists will benefit. The artists will benefit, and the hosts will benefit!

Scott's brother Todd Fertig should get in contact with me too, but I don't have an email or phone for him. Link him in? The conundrum. Sigh.

For now, Save the Date, as awful as I think that sometimes sounds. "Oh, I'm so important, save my date, save it!" I probably won't have a date, either, so, there's that, too. But that's ok. Do Yoga

Reading into Things

That's supposedly the outcome of the Tarot spread in the photo. Of course, one will interpret that solely on one's "present circumstances."

One of my favorite artists, Niki de Saint Phalle, says in a documentary film clip about her Tarot Garden, that she believes the hand of her Magician sculpture was able to close a nuclear power plant that was harmful, because the position of the hand faced the nuclear plant.

Whether or not that's true, the power plant did close. And it was her choice to read her Tarot Garden anyway she chose.

Hello, Mr. Soul

Thanks to Scott Fertig for the suggestion to post my dog Roxy's photo. Taken yesterday, on a walk.

Scott Fertig has a lot of soul. He thinks the photo has a beautiful quality, especially when you view it large, a "fishbowl effect."

I often run my dog through this park in Crafton PA. It's a former trolley line converted into a trail. Good for dog walking, good for running.

I like to listen to music when I run, and I have always liked the song "Mr. Soul" by Neil Young. I like Neil Young, and his values, and everything he stands for, pretty much. He's a Canadian first, but he seems to really appreciate the United States.

Sometimes a song's lyrics can fit exactly to the situation you're in. No matter what situation you're in.

Art-y Friends Old and New

I went to the Shadow Lounge in East Liberty, PA last evening. It is a great space. Saw some amazingly talented people there. I did not see Kissey perform, because I got sleepy. And she forgot to sign the open mike sign-up, so went on very late. Oops. Oh, well. We were wondering why they didn't call her. They did call Christiane D., but I guess you have to be Christiane D. to be called.

It's great to be meeting all these wonderful people. And in Pittsburgh, where everyone knows everyone, it's easy to find how you are connected to an old friend or a new friend.

When you meet people from other countries, it's not as easy to find how you're connected, but it can be even more fun. Then you get to get out the globes and maps and say, "hmm...where is that? Really? I have a friend from there!" See, we're all connected anyway.

Being Older and Sexy

I was going to post on this topic, but instead I'd let a picture of my friend Terez Cannon speak for itself. Then I realized I run at the mouth and I'd post anyway.

Men, you know who you are, Terez is single, and French. Really French as in from France and still has the accent. Now, if that does something for you, you need to say hello to Terez.

Terez lives in Crafton, but she's not going to house you. She is currently the CFO of a boutique international digital publishing company and is busy (stop drooling and google if you must). Instead, you can buy your own second home in Crafton, and invite her over for a gourmet dinner. A dinner that you cook for her, or even better, a dinner that you PAY someone fabulous to cook her while you keep her glass full of Cabernet. Real French Cabernet. That's RFC, baby. Not Merlot, cuz she doesn't like Merlot.

The Library is Your Friend and Mine

You can learn a lot from friends. I learn a lot from my dog, when I'm actually paying attention to her and not focusing solely on myself.

So, if the library is our friend, go into your library, or at least go online to one, and you can learn much. Sometimes just by walking the aisles, or the "stacks." "Stacks" sounds cooler to me, if sounding cool is important to you.

I saw 8 hawks circling on my street this evening. They were beautiful and kind of eerie.

Hawks are supposedly symbolically connected to the Tarot card for "Temperance."

One of my first word necklaces I made reads "Temperance."

I love the artist Niki de saint Phalle, and her Tarot garden. She claimed that temperance is "the right way." The right way for those of us with passionate natures.

Love Your Mother - Earth and Otherwise

One photo is me and my mom, with my mom taking her first ever phone picture. She doesn't have a computer, so she can't read my blog. That may change soon, and it would be good for her to have a computer.

The other photo is a sign I made for our Clean Up Day in Crafton PA.

On Mother Earth, April 22 is Earth Day. (Also the Pennsylvania Presidential Primary. You know, for US President. Voting. Voting is good.) Many communities are sponsoring earth friendly clean-up events on or around that day, maybe the weekend before? You should check your local source of all good information to find out when your community might be having theirs.

And then, you could make some art out of anything you clean up. Some things my mother's junking might turn into art, if they aren't art already. I think the artists are grateful for what she's junking, because the cost of things to make into art can be high.

The Cupcake Man and Buying Art

I promised the Cupcake Man at Dozen in Lawrenceville (Dozen Bake Shop located at 3511 Butler Street) that he was blogworthy. He is. Viola.

He knew a gal like me could handle the not-so-sweet chocolate stout cupcake. These cupcakes are art to me. If you want hardcore "not sweet", scrape off the frou-frou white cream on top and viola. I didn't even get a bag, just ate from my hand on the street. Thank you, Cupcake Man.

And I forgot to tell all the people I email blasted today that my blog is for people who BUY ART. This means it's for everyone.

Don't be afraid. Just buy it...buy it...buy it...you're probably buying it already and you don't know it already. It's ok. It doesn't have to be fancy schmancy. Feel your non-snootiness and buy it anyway. Fear not the art, because there are lovely people like the Cupcake Man in the right places, who will give you good service, even in a gallery, and make you comfortable. And if they don't do that, shame on them. Buy your art somewhere else where they do make you feel comfortable and give you good service.

Buy what you can afford, and buy what you love. And if you can't afford any yet, um, make someone else buy you art for a gift.

Gypsies and Violins

Last night I took friends from Detroit, Irina and Michael, to a Future Tenant event.

Great food and exotic coffees, and a raffle for some lovely art.

My favorite was the Gypsy Violinist, though. I don't know her name, but I love to hear and watch her play.

If you ever find yourself in the Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh, and you see her playing on the street, please: give this woman some cash. It must be hard work; she has built up some impressive muscle in those arms.

On the way to the event, Irina, Michael and I drove down into the West End, and as Irina noticed the lights on the hillside, she said: "This reminds me of a time in Spain, I noticed lights on the hillside. The lights were in little caves. I asked the driver what the lights in the caves were, and he said, 'Those are gypsies'."

My cousin says that my sister and I are attracted to beads, "because of our 'Gypsy heritage'."

Sus's mother's nickname is "Gypsy." Shh...

Amazingly, I thought I was taking Irina and Michael to something "different," yet, they have the real thing with regard to International/Middle Eastern experience in Detroit. Still, they seemed to enjoy. Even though I made them shell out $40...all for art, though!

Phat Man Dee performed with her beautiful voice and entertained all. I went home and dreamt that she told me that she was from Oklahoma City, where another of my favorite artists/people, Wayne Coyne, lives.

Sometimes I feel like I Pittsburgh's, or at least Crafton's, Wayne Coyne.

This is a photo of Matt O'Riley's "egg art." I feel lucky to own a very special egg that Matt made for me! The energy comes through the egg and makes me feel very happy, secure, and soothed when I hold it. To me, it has the effect of staring at a Japanese garden or a "zen sandbox" full of ripples.

Where Do Artists Live?

I'm sure they live everywhere. I should I ask, where do artists own property? What makes an "artist community"?

If I had to guess, I'd say, they live where there are affordable properties. That is, if "they" means the average starving artist.

Tribal Art? Are You in My Tribe?

Had a lovely dinner with Susan Constanse and Christiane Leach last night. Pasta.

We got talking about tribes, although I can't recall using that word specifically.

We got talking about how Pittsburgh has a river that flows in the same way as the Nile. About how this might have meaning for some that it doesn't for others.

We talked on mothers, and grandmothers, and family histories. And on ethnicities, or "tribes."

Ok, we talked briefly on fathers, too. But that was about pheremones and smells and things that are for another post. Or not.

We talked mostly on the women.

My great grandmother was German, or at least, from Germany. But some who see her photo see a bi-racial woman. Or a woman who, maybe at least, had a great grandmother who was from Africa. As Christiane said last night, "that frizz (frizzy hair) has to come from somewhere!"

I trust this assessment from Christiane, because, well, she's Black. Oh, and she's German. One might say that this mix results in her ability to create soulful music, as well as to appreciate Edelweiss. I like Christiane's music, and I like Edelweiss, too.

My great grandmother was also involved in an organization that defended the rights of Native Americans, or possibly Christian-ized - "Christianed?"- them, depending on the story you find to ring true. So she was working for and with other Tribes.

Christiane left dinner last night with a Persian Lamb jacket, and an Edelweiss-embroidered vest. Susan left with some sexy black clothes. Both women look smashing in these get-ups.

Hey, wait...Susan is German too. Hmm.

I think I was the only partial-Croatian at the table, but you never know. You just never know.

The Rising Cost of...

...Transportation.

I'm fortunate that my community has a busway that I can walk to. I rarely drive compared to most, at least in a typical week. I'm not lying when I tell my insurance company that I use my car "for pleasure," only.

This means that I had no idea until last week that the price of gas is what it is. I feel for you car commuters, I really do. The price of my bus pass did go up this year, but it doesn't go up every week. Ouch.

I've always taken public transportation when it was convenient and available. So, when I was looking for a first home, availability and proximity of public transportation ranked high.

Pittsburgh is a strange place for public transportation. I really don't think we need that new tunnel going under the river, but...

Some of the strangeness relates to people's willingness to take the bus or not because of what I'll refer to as their assessment of public transportation as "icky." I'm sure there are people in NYC or DC who feel it's icky, too...but, really?

I can't help but think this ickyness factor is really the lack of willingess to sit near someone who doesn't look like you, smell like you, or act like you. But I can tell you that if you time it right, there can be many available seats on the bus or trolley. You don't have to sit next to any of those people. Or, you can stand.

Art in Crafton, PA

I live in Crafton, PA. Someone recently asked me, "how many artists are in Crafton?" I really don't know. I know of 3 who I'd name as "artists-by-trade." I know of at least 5 more I'd consider "artists-by-desire," some reluctant to call themselves artists at all.

In Crafton---permanently? Temporarily? Live in Crafton? We do have a lovely art gallery, Le Poire, operated by Joyce Werwie Perry. Her daughter Renae makes some lovely jewelry, too.

There is also Brian McCormack, born in Crafton, with many exciting years in NYC, who's back in Crafton for a bit to share some exciting things with Pittsburgh. One of those things is a show at Cabaret at Theater Square this weekend, a Marlene Dietrich revue. Check it out if you are in the 'burgh.

There is also art found in Crafton. Sometimes "guerilla art" that mysteriously pops up, like a pinata on a closed bridge. A pinata that disappears the next day. One wonders if the candy inside every was eaten. But then, how would one know for sure there was candy inside? Mysterious. Hmm. The bridge is open now, by the way. The pinata is probably in the public works garage.

Or, take the Susan Constanse petit four in my dining room. With the Eye of Horus on it. Sinful and yummy, I think Susan would agree.

And to misquote Kurt Vonnegut in a Charlie Rose interview, for me, the petit four is about "food, sex, and becoming." All of which goes on in Crafton, PA, and no doubt in your neighborhood, too.

I started a blog because Susan Constanse advised me to do so. I trust Susan Constanse because she is hardworking, and an artist. And depending on who you talk to, I might be both hardworking and an artist as well. I believe Susan creates beautiful work. I know it's her desire to create it. I believe she's fulfilling her desire.

My desire is to help artists like Susan achieve the success they deserve, while allowing them the time to do what they do---make art. Insert "duh" here, but only if it makes you more comfortable.

If you recall seeing an honest, deserving person holding a sign with "Will Work For Food," then you know why I recently made necklaces saying "Will Art for Work." It has nothing to do with poverty. Or does it? You tell me.

But today's necklace is not "Will Art for Work," it's "Divine Order." With a pendant of the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal specifically. And I'm not a practicing Catholic anymore, and reading Joseph Campbell's Power of Myth helps me understand why I decided quite a while ago that organized religion doesn't fit me, but why I'm perfectly ok with it fitting others. I'm more than ok, actually, as I think it's rightfully the only thing some people have to give their life a necessary moral compass.

Enough for now. But not. Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal is also the patron saint of motorcyclists, which is why I bought it at the Catholic Store in Bloomfield. This myth helps me feel safe on my motorcycle, and I just think it's pretty.

I think it's ok to like art 'cause it's pretty.
